We’ve added a News feature that we think is pretty sweet!
Adding a news feature was a very high priority for us because we wanted to quickly convey happenings and exciting stuff as soon as they happen. I’ve been trying to get my recent posts plugin to display the date in a format similar to how you guys have done it but cannot.

Check out my post about extending WordPress further by using temporary queries. It should give you an idea of where to start.
That’s the exact method I’m using to pull in News articles on the home page.
