CMU's Sneakerology 101

When I was in college, I remained “undeclared” for the first 2 years. I was having a hard time choosing which career path to walk down, so it was easier to just worry about my core classes and let the major figure itself out. However, in the first semester of my third year I finally declared my a major — Music. I loved it. I studied the jazz greats, began thinking about my written thesis, and scheduled extra drum lessons with my student teacher. After about 6 months, I realized that I was getting lapped by the kids who had been reading music sheets since the womb. Needless to say, I wised up and dropped my aspirations of a music degree like a bad habit. After realizing that this could be a blessing in disguise, I moved on to what would become my final field of study — Marketing. I was lucky enough to attend one of the best and highest ranked business colleges in the nation and got an incredible business education. However, after learning of Carnegie Mellon’s newest class, I find it hard not to wish for a second chance to go back a few years and take Sneakerology 101.

Yeah, you heard that right. This is a university-level class that is being taught in one of the best schools around. Even though this is a student-led class, students receive full credit for taking it that is applicable towards their major. Here’s a description of the course, straight from CMU’s web site:

In this course we will explore the extensive impact that sneakers have on fashion, identity, and cultures throughout the world. There is no prerequisite of pairs, so whether you are a true “Sneakerhead” or just someone who is interested in urban culture, this class promises to invigorate the sole.

As someone who is really in to the “Sneaker Culture”, this is definitely something I would love to participate in. It would be incredible if this class took off and the curriculum was passed from school to school. I would certainly use my alumni status and take this class if it was ever offered here in Atlanta. Anyone interested in trying to get this thing nation-wide?
